Printable Solar Cells

Posted by Jami on July 13, 2009

From Cosmos Magazine:

SYDNEY: Solar panels could soon be printed in the same way as bank notes, thanks to world-leading innovation by Australian scientists.

Researchers from the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium, which includes scientists from government research agency the CSIRO, the University of Melbourne and Monash University, have developed a new technique that could open up the door for cheap, mass-produced solar cells.

“These solar cells are cutting edge technology and offer advantages over traditional solar technology,” Peter Batchelor, Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources, said at the launch. “The production of these film-like solar cells will be literally as easy as printing money.”

Reduced Advertising During Recession Negatively Impacts Consumer Perception

Posted by Jami on May 20, 2009

From Print in the Mix:

More than 48% of U.S. adults believe that a lack of advertising by a retail store, bank or auto dealership during a recession indicates the business must be struggling. Likewise, a vast majority perceives businesses that continue to advertise as being competitive or committed to doing business.

The Ad-ology Research study, “Advertising’s Impact in a Soft Economy,” analyzes consumer perception about businesses that continue to advertise, and those that do not, in the current economy.

The study finds advertising appears to play a key role in consumers’ view of how a business is doing, and by not advertising, businesses may be sending a warning signal to current and potential customers.

Other key findings:

  • TV, newspaper, direct mail, and Internet are the top four media from which consumers saw/heard an ad within the last 30 days that led them to take action
  • 40% of consumers use coupons more now than a year ago
Most consumers are as willing or more willing to pay more for ‘healthy’ or ‘organic’ products than they were a year ago
  • A ‘deeply discounted price’ was the number-one factor that would make consumers more likely to purchase a big-ticket item (+$1,000)
  • Store Web sites ranked second only to search engines as the way consumers research products and shop online.

Cutting Spending Hurts Brands Long Term

Posted by Jami on April 7, 2009

Companies and brands that went with the flow of the boom-bust cycle by cutting ad spending — as data suggest household and personal-care players did last year — tended to lose more share to private labels both immediately and longer term.

Companies whose ad spending didn’t vary according to economic cycles — based on an analysis of Ad Age data on global ad spending — also tended to increase their stock prices an average of 1.3 percentage points annually ahead of others from 1986 to 2006, said Mr. Steenkamp, who analyzed global results of 26 marketers across multiple industries.

Couch 2 Print?

Posted by Jami on March 30, 2009

From Joystiq.com: Nintendo of Japan has just introduced a new Wii channel that offers the best reason yet for the Wii to have any sort of photo functionality built-in: the Digicam Print Channel. In short, through a collaboration with Fujifilm, Japanese Wii users can order up prints of their digital photos – accessed via the console’s SD slot, of course – along with special photo books for ¥1,575 ($14.71), super deluxe Mario-flavored photo books for ¥2,480 ($23.16), or meishi (think Japanese business cards) sporting the user’s very own Mii, available at ¥500 per 30 cards.

(At Joystiq you can watch a video of how it works)
